one of the classics |
| this is one of the many GREAT John Wayne films. it is helped by a star studded cast including a very young James Caan (Mississippi) and another legend of the big screen Robert Mitchum who plays Waynes old acquaintance who has turned town drunk/sheriff. All three give stellar performances! my only dissapointment with this movie was the lack of extra's but it still is worth every penney and more. this movie is a must have for even the slightest western Connoisseur! |

Wayne, Mitchum, Caan, Hawks...what more? |
This review isn't intended for those who are partial to John Wayne movies, since they all probably own "Eldorado" anyway; nor is it for someone who is so impartial that they want to know whether or not to get this movie without considering who is in it. Simply put, you can't, because this is the all-time best introduction to John Wayne movies. It may lack the complexity of other Wayne movies like "The Searchers," or "The Cowboys," but that's not the point. He plays his quintessential role in the quintessential Old Western story. All of John Wayne's best movies have an excellent supporting cast, and this one does not disappoint. While most stars have to fight to be noticed when sharing the same screen with the Duke, Robert Mitchum does more than hold his own. In fact, he owns every scene he is in. James Caan is less dominant but no less memorable. (By the time this movie is over you will not forget the name "Alan Bourdillion Traherne".)
To put it in a few words, if you do not like this movie, you do not like any of John Wayne's movies. |

Watch Rio Bravo with this 5 star classic. |
| John Wayne was supurb in this true good vs evil western. I wish I could substitute Dean Martin in as the sheriff instead of Robert Mitchum and Walter Brennan as Bull. But this is still an amusing story. |
