SanDisk 1 GB MP3 Player Silver

Average rating: Stars
Stars what the other reviews aren't telling you
I love this thing to death, but it has it's flaws. It certainly the best super-compact mp3 player available, considering the competition (ipod shuffle, to name one) doesn't even allow you to select files.

-No software necessary to link up to a Windows PC.
The mp3 player will appear as a removable drive about 5 seconds after you plug it in to your comp's USB port and turn it on. Windows 98SE appears to require a driver.

-You start off with 980MB of free space (due to different 1GB measurement standards between manufacturers and Windows).

-Volume fades in and out at the beginnings/ends of songs automatically. There is no way to disable this. It is a short fade and obviously intended to make sure you aren't "startled" by a song that starts suddenly, but I personally dislike this feature.

-NO PLAYLISTS. The best you can do is put the track number in the file name. However, I had some trouble with this at first. The problem is that the mp3 player orders files and folders not alphabetically but by the order in which the files were put on the device. The solution is to add the track numbers to the file names BEFORE copying your music to the device, this will cause windows to write the files in the correct order.

-Easy Interface. I heard some other reviewers say that the interface was a little difficult. I personally thought the basic functionality was pretty straightforward. The bottom line is that some people need help and others are intuitive. If you can set your VCR you shouldn't need the manual.

-Excellent Sound Quality. Even on the little earpiece headphones, I'm getting better sound than I can get from better headphones connected to my computer. Notably the bass is decent. There is also an equalizer (kinda hard to find, gotta hold down the A-B button for 2 seconds to get to it).

-Beautiful Display. Yes it's only a standard LED with a blue backlight, but titles scroll nicely and the volume monitor moves smoothly too. I wasn't expecting it to be so clear.

-Superfast file transfer. Finally a USB 2.0 device that works like it should. Transferring a full CD (192kbps, 100mb, 15 files) took 15-20 seconds. Transferring individual files is fast enough that the transfer progress bar doesn't even hardly have a chance to pop up.

-Unbeatable Battery Life. I can't believe I'm getting so much out of one AAA battery.

-Carrying Accessories. Seemed very durable to me, despite other reviewer's opinions. Nothing made from fracturable plastic. I do however doubt the durability of the strap hook on top of the device.

-User Manual. The manual leaves a lot to the user, and the sandisk website doesn't offer much additional help. I've offered a couple little usage tips in this review. Other than that, the user is left to figure out the advanced features of the device for themself.

Final verdict: I'd buy it again, with enthusiasm. Enjoy.

Stars Too small
Sound is great but if you need glasses, you will sure need them for this unit. The display is tiny and a bit confusing. Still haven't been able to teach my wife how to use it, but it's our first one. Earbuds are a tad large for me, but then it's not for me.

Stars great, but no way to hold it
I love this MP3 player EXCEPT that the little plastic case that came with it ripped almost immediately. So then I tied a string to the little plastic (not metal) loop on top. This then broke as well. So now I have a really hard time carrying it while I run. No way attach it to me and no protective holder.
