Great Camera |
| The Nikon S1 has been the best digital camera I own. Due to it's small size I can carry it everyplace and the pictures are great. If you are looking for a handy camera to have around this is it. |

Awesome!!! Nikon does it again. |
We bought this camera so we would not have to take our larger Coolpix 8700 on a cruise to Alaska. I knew
the scenery would challenge the camera as well as the shots inside our ship. The S1 functioned perfectly. I
took pictures at a few family events to familiarize myself with it. I just set it on program mode and did not
try to adjust for various light situations. We took pictures on glaciers, in staterooms and from planes and
helicopters. The only two problems I had was my own impatience waiting the moment it took to autofocus. I
have had the same problem with all three Coolpix cameras I have owned as well as my F100 and F5. I also
forgot where the lens was several times and have a few shots of my out of focus index finger. The zoom
feature is amazing and seems to do much better than the 3x advertized. The optics on this camera are
excellent.
The S1 is not a professional camera, however I took several pictures that I will have no hesitation in framing
and could probably sell if I wanted. I would highly recommed it if a person wants one digital camera which
can be taken anywhere and give excellent results. I would not recommed it as an only camera if one is a
serious ameteur. Another limitation is that the flash is relatively short range. What can one expect of a small
camera? I did have some red-eye, but did not use the camera's red-eye reduction system. The software I use
eliminates red-eye easily, so I decided not to use the reduction feature.
I recommend using the small strap included with the camera. I never had a problem, but it seems like it
might be easy to drop. For an added $100 or so, one can buy a waterproof version of this camera (S2). We didn't
have any problem in rainy Alaska, however.
I am not familiar with the smaller camera made by other companies. They may be very good. I have been a
Nikon user since my Nikkormat days. I've never gone wrong with a Nikon. |

wow! |
Firstly, I am not a tech-junkie, i.e. I do not update my stuff every two months, once I buy something it usually stays with me til it eventually falls apart or is no longer compatible with what I need it for. Hence after much deliberation, I decided this year to buy a digital camera. I have been staying away from them all these years simply because I had a pretty good film-camera and I didnt really see the advantages. However I figured I stayed away long enough and decided to check out whats available and do a bit of reading into the whole thing, because it was all quite new to me.
My options were the nikon coolpix S1, the S2, the new sony cybershot T7 and the sony cybershot T33. Basically I guess my requirements may seem quite superficial to anyone who knows a lot about digital cameras and what to look for. I wanted a slim camera (as you can guess from my options!) that I could easily carry around with me, I wanted a big LCD screen (simply because its cool!), around 3-5MPs resolution, optical zoom and a rechargable batteries with a dock.
I then narrowed down my options down to the S1, the S2 and the sony T7. The T7 I went to a store and checked out and it is GORGEOUS. However its pricey ($500) and there is the danger that you could lose it or drop it because its tiny and to be honest it wasnt too handy because it was so thin that it felt like i was trying to take photos with a THICK credit card or something!
So between the S1 and the S2 the only difference that mattered to me was the fact that the S2 was splash-proof. This wasnt a big factor to me because I wasnt planning on taking pics while wakeboarding or something. So hence I decided on the S1.
Amazon were amazing, I placed my order on friday and I got the camera on tuesday. Very very impressed with the service. The camera itself, I've only had a chance to play around with it for a few hours and so far it's GREAT, no complaints at all. Nikon is a great make and I admit I can be biased because every single camera I've ever owned has been a Nikon. Overall, if you want a camera that match the basic requirements I mentioned before, this is the one to go for! |
